The Sideline Eye has been casting their watchful “eye” over all the latest results and matchups in...

After a rather warm night at Penrith, the competition this week heads out to Bankstown and Tempe. The Sideline Eye has been casting their watchful “eye” over all the latest results and matchups in the Vawdon Cup in particular the Men’s Premier League for this week. The shadowy figure offers a tale of the tape for round two.

2010 Vawdon Cup Round Two: Men’s Premier League

Round one of the 2010 Vawdon Cup commenced out at the Kingsway (Penrith Touch Fields) with the results setting the scene for what should be a thrilling MPL competition.

Both the 2009 Vawdon Cup Premiers (Penrith) & State Cup Premiers (Hornsby) tasted defeat to prove just how competitive the MPL division is and just like the NRL “anyone can beat anyone on any given night”.

Round two will once again be a nightmare for all the tipping comps as selecting a full round in MPL is about as tough as NSW winning a Rugby League State of Origin Series.

Parramatta Eels vs. Eastern Suburbs Roosters: Bankstown F3 7.50pm

What a fantastic start to the 2010 season by two former glamour clubs in MPL in the Roosters & Eels! One gets the feeling that the word “consistency” will be the key word for both camps leading in to this Friday night.

Whilst Parramatta found some form after a shaky start v Varsity last week it was the boy’s from Bondi that hit the ground running giving it to last year’s champions Penrith putting everyone on notice that they are in fact the real deal.

When you take your seats at Bankstown tomorrow evening at 7.50pm please do not be confused that these two clubs have put on a golden oldies match. In actual fact both clubs have recruited two of our games legends in Garry Sonda (Roosters) & Shane Fredriksen (Eels) for the 2010 season and watching both of these champion players go head to head once again is surely worth the price of admission alone.

I really am struggling to pick a winner in this one but will base my thoughts around that Parramatta have been building nicely over the past 18 months and have kept the nucleus of some good young kids together for a good period of time.

Eels by 1.

Canterbury Bulldogs vs. Western Suburbs Magpies: Tempe Field 1 7.50pm

Without doubt the game of the round, the dogs came out barking last Friday night smacking a disappointing Hornsby 8-5. Joel Willoughby has returned and word on the street around Belmore is that the Dogs are once again looking to re capture the form that seen them take all before them in 2007.

Meanwhile West’s put the feet up last Friday night and enjoyed a 1st round bye. With no Lukins or Stanton many are prepared to say that West’s cannot win it but gee you’re a brave man to say they can’t. They are coached by the best in the business and a simple game plan built around a good team spirit seen them come within a whisker of stealing the title from the Panthers in 2009.

Plenty of current & former Australian stars will be on show including Roberts, Brierty, Willoughby, Bird, Prowse, Ziade & Rushworth along with possibly the best match up of all – Current Australian M/O coach Tony Trad v Australian M/O Assistant Coach Peter Forrester.

The game should be a ripper and to avoid disappointment please allow yourself plenty of time in order to get a good vantage point.

Bulldogs by 2.

Penrith Panthers vs. Manly Warringah Sea Eagles: Bankstown F2 9.30pm

Two 1st round teams both coming off disappointing first game defeats will ensure this one is played with a touch of desperation.

The Panthers will be livid with the way they played last week and I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall this week out west to witness the dressing down the team surely would have received from Coach David Collins.

On the other side the Sea Eagles who tasted some success by reaching the last four at last year’s State Cup came back to earth with a thud coping a 9-4 hiding at the hands off new boy’s ACT Phoenix.

Look for plenty of touchdowns in this one with the likes of Brisby, Springfield, Moylan Brothers, Stanton, Bishop & Buckley looking to attack at every opportunity.

Hard to see the Panthers 0 & 2, but the jury is certainly out on how this team will handle the pressure of defending a title.

Panthers by 3.

Varsity Stingers v Hornsby Lions: Tempe F1 9.30pm

Great to see the Varsity boy’s step up to the plate and challenge themselves in MPL. They really jumped out of the blocks against Parramatta taking a shock early lead 2-0. Class did prevail in the end but I have no doubt this team will improve as the year goes on and might just provide an upset or two along the way.

As for Hornsby well your guess is as good as anybody’s. Who is going to turn up? Will they get out of 2nd gear? Are they just content to “cruise” until the glory rounds? To be honest I am not really sure that they could provide the answers to the above questions.

I believe Hornsby will be too strong but will steer clear of this one when putting my multiples on.

Lions by 4

Enjoy your Touch and be sure to get out & watch our Premier players battle it out tomorrow evening at either Tempe or Bankstown!!

The NSWTA State Cup is NSW’s premier mass participation Touch Football event. Leading into its 34th year, the event is experiencing significant growth, with over 3,500 members participating annually.

Following on from the success of the 2009 event, we're going to need your help again to manage the expected field of over 4,000 participants!

It goes without saying that this enormous event could not be staged without the involvement of volunteers. The 2009 event relied on the hard work of more than 30 dedicated and supportive people but we need to recruit even more to ensure the 2010 event runs smoothly.

So, if you're not planning on participating, we could sure use your help. It's another terrific way to get involved without missing out on all the fun!

The main reasons why people volunteer include:

“Being part of the event and supporting my friends and family”

“Helping put smiles on participants faces”

“Meeting and talking to lots of interesting people”

"To extend current or learn new skills"

Why help?
Helping at the event is an exciting and satisfying experience. Not only are you assisting in getting people active in the community, but you can also reap rewards from your work.

Statistics demonstrate that people volunteer because they gain some personal satisfaction, develop social networks, learn new skills, gain work experience and maintain existing skills. Some people have even met their future partners on the day!

Benefits
All volunteers are provided with event uniform, meal money, accommodation, travel assistance, clear job description and information and support in order to perform their duties.

What can I do?
There are a number of positions you can do during the event depending on the type of commitment you can make whether it is one, two or three days.
Chris Dolahenty - New Independent Director

The Board of the NSWTA is excited to announce that Chris Dolahenty from the Wagga Wagga Touch...

Chris started his involvement in the sport at Hawkesbury Touch in the late 70’s playing and refereeing. After some short sojourns with Rugby League and Water Ski racing, it was not until 1986 where he took up Touch again more seriously in Wagga. Here he continued his playing, coaching and refereeing and it saw him selected to play for the Country Over 30’s in the late 80’s before moving more permanently into the referee pathway. He was graded as a State referee in 1994 going on to receive his Level 5 badge in 1996. After retiring his leadership skills were recognised by the Referees Director and he was offered a position on the NSW Referees Coaching Panel. Subsequently in 2001 he was appointed to the National Referees Coaching Panel. Chris has been a board member of Wagga Wagga Touch Association since 1999 and the Director of Wagga Junior Touch since 2003.

In business he is currently employed by TAFE NSW to teach Aircraft Technicians for the Defence Force. Prior to that, he worked at Charles Sturt University as an Educational Designer working on distant education packages. This was all after a 28 year career as an Aircraft Technician, (fixing planes – F-111, F-18, C-130, B-707 etc) in the Air Force. As well as a Teaching Degree, Chris has a degree in Human Resource Management and other trade related certifications.

The Board recognised and has seen the leadership qualities, clear and logical thinking attributes and calm sensible approach that Chris possess. They realise he will also be able to bring to the Board first hand experiences from a country Touch perspective. The Board were all unanimous in seeking Chris and his more than capable skill sets out to fill this important position on the sports leadership group within NSW. We are all looking forward to working with Chris, as he is excited to be taking on this role.

On behalf of the Board, staff and members we welcome Chris Dolahenty to this position and know that as in everything else Chris has accomplished in both his work and Touch career, he will also make this a success.
