World Indigenous Touch Tournament - Day 1

28.01.10

Australia has come up against some tough opposition at the World Indigenous Touch Tournament.

The tournament started with the Opening Ceremony held on Wednesday, featuring a traditional ceremony. Michael Zitha represented the touring party and lead a dance with some of the male players.

The start of games saw the Men’s take on Tonga, winning in a close one 6-4. the game started off very quick, with the game going end to end very quickly. The game was tied at 4-4 at one stage before the men’s put on two quick touchdowns to win 6-4. Edrick Lee scored three touchdowns for the match.

In the Men’s second game, Australia defeated Niue 11-6. the Australian Coaching staff were pleased with the defensive efforts of the men. Stand out players were Luke Norford and Cody Green.

The men’s take on NZ Maori at 12:10pm and China at 2:40pm on day two of the tournament.

The women’s were unfortunate to have two losses to start the tournament. Australia was beaten by Ao Teaora Invitational 7-1 as it was a big learning curve for some of the younger players in the team, but learnt a lot from the experience and will sure develop from here. Top players were Bo De La Cruz, Jordan Ah Sam, Jaylene Bonson and Mel Ingram.

Australia fronted the New Zealand Maori in game two with a much closer result, but could not get over the line with a win going down 6-3.

It was a much better effort with a high standard of defensive touch. Australia were locked at 3-3 all at one stage but a forward pass decision when Australia had scored, halted Australia’s progress with NZ Maori running in three touchdowns to finish the match.

The Coaching staff were very pleased with the efforts of all players.

Mel Ingram, Kayla Fawkner and Sam Mitchell played well.

The Women take on Pasifika Invitational at 10:30am, Ao Teaora at 1:00pm and NZ Maori at 3:30pm.

*please note, time is in New Zealand time.

We wish all players the best for day two of the World Indigenous Touch Tournament.
